Board of Directors

  • President: Dr. John Parker

    Dr. Parker is a Registered Professional Archaeologist and has been a member of the Lake County Historical Society since the 1970's. He has conducted historical and archaeological work in Lake County for more than 50 years, nominating 53 sites to the National Register of Historic Places and securing funding for the purchase and preservation of 38 of those sites. He has a Ph.D. in archaeology from UCLA where he served as director of the California Historical Resources Information System office and worked as a collections technician at the Fowler Museum of Cultural History. He has conducted historical and archaeological work with Native American communities, city and county planning departments, state and federal agencies throughout California. Dr. Parker is a member of the Society for American Archaeology, life member and has served as a three-year vice-president of the Society for California Archaeology, a director and life member of the San Luis Obispo County Archaeological Society, and a life member of the San Luis Obispo County Historical Society.

  • Vice President: Kevin Ness

    Mr. Ness was born and raised in Lake County. He graduated from Lower Lake High School in 1975 and went to Butte College until 1977. He returned to Clearlake Highlands to help his parents run their jewelry store. In 1978, Kevin studied gemstone ID and diamond appraising at GIA in Santa Monica. He has owned the 75-year-old family business for more than 30 years. Kevin joined the Historical Society about 20 years ago and has been on the board of directors since 2012. In addition to his vice president duties, he volunteers at the Ely Stage Stop Museum.

  • Treasurer: John Gorbenko

    Mr. Gorbenko attended California State University – Los Angeles, where he received his Bachelors Degree in Nursing in 1979, and his Masters Degree in Health Care Management in 1983. He worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles for ten years before relocating to Kelseyville in 1988, where he accepted a position in the Emergency Department at what was Lakeside Community Hospital at that time. He also managed the Emergency Department from 1991 to 2011, before returning to patient care in the Emergency Department. He retired in 2020. He became a volunteer at Lake County Historical Society in 2020 and took over the Treasurers position in 2021. He also volunteers at the Fiddlers Jam and numerous events at the Ely Stage Stop Museum.

  • Secretary: Bonnie Skee

    Bonnie Skee has worked in the insurance industry for 34 years, where she is currently employed. She first moved to Lake County in 1972 and became interested in the local history. Bonnie has served on the Lake County Historical Society Board since 2007 and still enjoys bringing the past to life for the public.

  • Director: Fred Castaldo

    Fred Castaldo is a retired employee from Pacific Gas & Electric Corp (PG&E). During his 38 years with PG&E, he held many positions, but retired as a Sr. Budget Analyst. Six months later, he was rehired as a contract employee, and he held the position of Finance Consultant for another 6 years. Mr. Castaldo has a BA in Administrative Management from St. Mary’s College, Moraga, CA. Mr. Castaldo brings a wealth of experience in the decision-making process and has experience in providing support to an organization’s Budget and Accounting policies and procedures. Fred currently serves on 4 Boards in Lake County: Lake County Historical Society (Past Financial/Treasurer), Middletown Senior Center (Recording Secretary), Konocti Senior Support Inc. (Treasurer), Italian Association (Financial/Treasurer).

  • Director: Cheyanne Parker

    Mrs. Parker was the Forman for the Rose Ranch in Monterey County between 1983 and 1995 (coordinating cattle movement, birthing, roundup, branding, castration, and general medical needs). She obtained her EMT certificate in 1993 from Hartnell College and worked for the Cambria Ambulance Service for 8 years. Between 1993 and 2001, she directed the Cambria Crisis Intervention Team, taught CPR, EMT, and First Responder classes at Cuesta College, Hartnell College and for the Atascadero Fire Department. Since 2000, she has worked alongside Dr. Parker as an archaeological field and lab technician. Mrs. Parker has worked as a docent for the Society's Ely Stage Stop Museum since 2011. Her work with the society has included historical research, public relations, curation, and display development.

  • Director: Phil Smoley

    Phil Smoley was originally from Glendora, Calif. before moving to Lake County in 1983. Passionate about history, he is a co-founder of the Lake County Civil War/History Roundtable, and a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, He was president of the LCHS 2010 to 2013 and currently serves as a Director for Region 4. His day job is broker owner of Country Air Properties. He is available to speak at events on topics related to history and real estate.

  • Director: Jim Marschall

    Mr. Marschall was born and raised in Lake County, Fourth Generation. He graduated from Kelseyville High School then received his Bachelor’s Degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He returned to Lake County, working in the Field of Agriculture, Food Machinery Corporation. Mr. Marschall was a volunteer fireman for Kelseyville Fire District. Later he volunteered as an Emergency Medical Technician. Later in life Mr. Marschall made a career change and received his Master’s Degree in Education. He taught High School Special Education for 25 years. Jim has been a member of the Lake County Historical Society since the 1970’s. Once retired, Mr. Marschall has taken on several rolls within the Historical Society, including membership chairperson, District 5 Board Member, school field trip coordinator, Fiddler’s Jam Co-Chairperson and several more projects.
